Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.
Players are granted the right to challenge particular calls from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move comes just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific situations, including:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible interference end of a rally.
Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
