Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were vandalized, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Police report they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.
Officers then located multiple other marked vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials say preliminary tests indicate the substance was probably human blood.
"There is still no indication as to its source; authorities are currently not aware of any injuries in connection with the incident," they commented.
City officials stated they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the public for details.
A senior official said the incident made him without words and required to be solved promptly.
"This act affects the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on a platform, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a gunman targeting residents of migrant background in 2020.
