Larian Studios Unveil a New Divinity, Calling it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The buzz surrounding the recent awards show has been intense, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer packed with intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This distinction implies that the team could be designing a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it pioneered the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, branching plots, and flexible progression—elements that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities that are viable with a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, allowing players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be approached in a variety of manners, frequently in surprising fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
