Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
