European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
